Privacy Policy

For the TV Remote mobile application (com.gamifyapps.tv.remote) on Android and iOS, and for this website.
Effective date: 26 August 2026 · Last updated: 6 September 2026 · Version: 1.1

The short version. The remote itself sends nothing anywhere. Your televisions, their pairing credentials, your layout and every button you press stay on your phone. There is no account, no server of ours, and no analytics.
The two versions are sold differently, and it changes this policy.
  • On iPhone and iPad, TV Remote is a paid app. You pay once on the App Store. There are no advertisements, no advertising software, no advertising identifier, no tracking prompt and no in-app purchase. Nothing in the app connects to the internet at all — the only sockets it opens are to your own television on your own network. Sections 5 and 6 do not apply to you.
  • On Android, TV Remote is free and funded by advertising. Google's advertising software collects data in order to show you advertisements — that is the only outward data flow in the app, it is described in full in section 5, and buying TV Remote Pro ends it.

Everywhere below that says "the free tier", "advertising", "Pro" or "your purchase", read it as Android unless the text says otherwise.

1. Who we are

TV Remote is developed and published by GamifyApps ("we", "us", "our"). We are the data controller for the limited processing described in this policy.

You can reach us at any time at support@gamifyapps.com. We answer privacy questions at the same address.

2. What this policy covers

This policy applies to the TV Remote mobile application for Android and iOS, the Android home-screen widget and Quick Settings tile, and the website at gamifyapps.com/apps/tvremote. There is no iPhone widget. It explains what data exists, where it lives, who else can see it, and what you can do about it.

It does not cover your television, your router, your app stores, or the streaming services you launch from the remote. Those are operated by other companies under their own policies.

3. What we do not collect

We want to be exact about this, because it is unusual and it is the point of the product.

  • We have no account system. There is nothing to sign up for, and we never ask for your name, email address, phone number or date of birth.
  • We operate no server that the app talks to. There is no backend to receive your data, and we do not plan to build one.
  • We have no analytics. We do not use Firebase Analytics, Google Analytics for Firebase, Crashlytics, or any other analytics or crash-reporting SDK. We do not know how many screens you opened or which buttons you pressed.
  • We never receive your televisions or their names. Not the make, not the model, not the friendly name, not the MAC address, not the IP address.
  • We never receive your pairing credentials. The certificate and private key that let your phone control your television are generated on your phone and never leave it.
  • We never receive your key presses. Every press goes from your phone straight to your television across your own network.
  • We never receive your media. Photos, music and video that you cast are served by your own phone directly to your own television, over your own Wi-Fi. They are not uploaded anywhere.
  • We never receive your voice. See section 8.
  • We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with data brokers.

On iPhone and iPad none of the above needs a qualifier at all: the app has no advertising software in it, so it makes no outbound connection except to your own television. On Android, buying TV Remote Pro reaches the same position — from then on the app connects only to your own television and to Google Play for your purchase.

4. Data stored on your device

TV Remote keeps the following on your phone. None of it is transmitted to us. All of it is removed when you uninstall the app.

Data TV Remote stores locally on your device
WhatWhere it is keptWhy
Your televisions — name, hardware address, last known IP, network service nameAn encrypted database in the app's private storageSo the app can reconnect to the right television without asking you again
Pairing credentials — a client certificate and its private keyiOS Keychain / Android Keystore-backed encrypted storageThese are what your television trusts. They are the most sensitive thing the app holds, and they are stored in the strongest container each platform offers
Your preferences — theme, haptics, default page, hardware volume keys, quick-access rowApp preferences storageSo the app opens the way you left it
Your app shortcuts and the packages your television has been seen runningApp storageTo offer the applications you actually use
Your TV Remote Pro entitlement flag, and whether the first free video cast has been used (Android only)App preferences storageSo the app opens ad-free without waiting on the network, and so the free video cast is offered once. On iOS everything is unlocked from first launch, so there is no flag to keep
Whether you have dismissed the "remove ads" offer, and how many times (Android only)App preferences storageSo we stop asking after the third dismissal, permanently. The offer does not exist on iOS
Advertising consent choices (Android only)Stored by Google's consent SDK on the deviceTo remember your answer and not ask repeatedly. iOS is never asked, because it shows no advertisements

On Android, the home-screen widget and Quick Settings tile read the same locally stored pairing credentials in order to send a key press. No additional or duplicate copy of your credentials is created for them.

5. Advertising on the free tier (Android only)

This entire section applies to Android only. The iPhone and iPad version is a paid app with no advertising software in it whatsoever. Nothing described here — no identifier, no IP address, no ad request, no consent flow, no tracking prompt — happens on iOS, because there is no advertising code to do it.

On Android, TV Remote is free because the free tier shows advertisements. Those advertisements are served by Google AdMob, part of Google LLC. This is the only component of the app that connects to the internet, and everything in this section stops applying the moment you buy TV Remote Pro.

What Google collects

To select, deliver and measure advertisements, and to detect fraudulent clicks, Google's advertising software may collect and process:

  • Your device's advertising identifier (the Android Advertising ID)
  • IP address, and coarse location derived from it (typically at country or city level)
  • Device and app information — device model, operating system version, language, screen size, network type, and the fact that this app requested an advertisement
  • Ad interaction data — that an advertisement was shown, viewed or tapped

Google receives none of your TV Remote content. It does not receive your televisions, their names or addresses, your pairing credentials, your layout, your key presses, your search text, your voice, or the files you cast. We do not send Google any custom event, user identifier or audience signal, because we do not collect any.

Your control over it

  • Consent. Where required — including in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland — the app shows Google's consent flow before any personalised advertising, and you can choose non-personalised advertisements. You can reopen that choice at any time from the app's settings.
  • Reset or limit your advertising ID in Android Settings › Privacy › Ads.
  • Remove advertising entirely by purchasing TV Remote Pro. Once Pro is active, no ad request is made and no ad SDK data is collected.

Google's own explanation of this processing is at How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services, and its privacy policy is at policies.google.com/privacy.

Where advertisements appear, and where they never do

We publish our own placement rules and follow them in code: no advertisement on, over or after a key press; none while pairing, reconnecting, or on the discovery screen; one reserved slot at the bottom of the remote face; and full-screen advertisements only at natural boundaries, never within thirty seconds of another.

6. Purchases

On iPhone and iPad you pay once for the app itself, on the App Store. There is no in-app purchase, no paywall and no restore, because there is nothing left to buy. Apple handles that transaction on its own listing under Apple's privacy policy; the app is not part of it and receives nothing about it. The rest of this section is Android only.

On Android, TV Remote Pro is a single non-consumable in-app purchase, processed entirely by Google Play Billing.

  • We never see your payment details. No card number, no billing address, no name reaches us or the app. Your store handles the transaction.
  • The app receives only a confirmation from Google Play that the purchase exists, and stores a flag on your device so it can open ad-free without waiting on the network.
  • Restoring a purchase asks Google Play again whether your account owns the product. It involves no server of ours.
  • Google processes your purchase under its own privacy policy.

7. Permissions and why each exists

Every permission the app requests maps to a feature you can point at. Declining any of them disables only the feature it belongs to; it never disables the remote.

Permissions requested by TV Remote and their purpose
PermissionPlatformPurpose
Local Network / Internet / Wi-Fi state / multicastBothFinding televisions on your own network and sending your key presses to the one you chose. On Android it is also used to fetch advertisements on the free tier; on iOS it is used for your television and nothing else.
MicrophoneBothVoice search, only while you are holding the microphone button.
Speech recognitioniOSTurning what you said into text that can be typed into the television.
Photos / media filesBothChoosing the picture, track or film you want to cast. Requested when you cast, not at launch.
NotificationsBothThe notice that a cast is in progress, which the operating system requires, and the sleep-timer notice.
VibrationAndroidHaptic feedback on button presses. Turn it off in the app and it is never used.
Advertising IDAndroidUsed by Google's ad SDK on the free tier only. See section 5. There is no equivalent on iOS: the app never reads Apple's advertising identifier and never shows the App Tracking Transparency prompt, because it serves no advertisements.

8. Voice search and speech

When you hold the voice-search button, your phone converts what you say into text, and the app types that text into your television's search box.

  • TV Remote never stores your audio, never transmits it to us, and has no server that could receive it. We have no access to your recording at any point.
  • The conversion is performed by your operating system's own speech recognition — Apple's Speech framework on iOS, the system recognition service on Android.
  • Where your device has an on-device speech model installed, the audio never leaves the device. Where it does not, your operating system may send the audio to its vendor's servers to transcribe it. That is your platform's behaviour, governed by Apple's or Google's privacy policy, and it happens the same way in any app that uses system dictation. It is not something TV Remote can override, and we tell you rather than implying otherwise.
  • The resulting text is sent only to your television.

9. Casting and the local server

To put your own photos, music or video on your television, the app runs a small web server on your phone for the length of the cast, and tells the television where to fetch the file. The television reads the file straight from your phone across your own Wi-Fi.

  • Nothing is uploaded. Your file does not travel to us, to Google, or to any other network.
  • The server hands out one unguessable token for one specific file. It cannot be asked to browse a folder or list your library — that design is deliberate, because a directory server aimed at your photo library would be exposed to everyone on your network.
  • The token stops working and the server shuts down when the cast ends.
  • The server is reachable only from your local network, never from the internet.
  • Casting also involves the television itself, and Cast-capable televisions communicate with Google under Google's own policies once a media session is running.

10. Legal bases (GDPR / UK GDPR)

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, our legal bases are:

  • Performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b)) — providing the app you installed, and processing your Android in-app purchase through Google Play.
  • Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)) — personalised advertising on Android, and the device permissions you grant. You may withdraw consent at any time; withdrawal does not affect processing already carried out.
  • Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)) — showing non-personalised advertisements to fund the free Android tier, and preventing advertising fraud, balanced against the very limited data involved.

Note that the data stored on your device (section 4) is not transmitted to us and we have no access to it, so we act as a controller only for the limited advertising and purchase processing described above. On iPhone and iPad there is no advertising and no in-app purchase, so there is no processing for which we are a controller at all — the app holds your data on your device and sends it nowhere.

11. Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to processing of your personal data, to data portability, and to withdraw consent.

In practice, here is how each is satisfied:

  • Access and portability. Everything TV Remote holds about you is on your own device and visible in the app. We hold nothing to send you.
  • Deletion. Uninstalling the app removes all of it. You can also remove individual televisions from Settings › Connected devices.
  • Withdrawing advertising consent (Android). Reopen the consent choice from the app's settings, or turn off personalisation in your system settings. Buying Pro removes the advertising entirely. On iOS there is no consent to withdraw, because there is no advertising.
  • Objecting or complaining. Write to support@gamifyapps.com. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

For the data processed by Google's advertising SDK on Android, you may also exercise your rights directly with Google using the controls in My Ad Center and your device's advertising settings.

12. US state privacy rights

If you are a resident of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, or another US state with a comprehensive privacy law, the following applies.

  • We do not sell your personal information for money.
  • On iPhone and iPad, no sharing or targeted advertising occurs at any time, because the app contains no advertising software. The rest of this section describes Android.
  • Personalised advertising may count as "sharing" or "targeted advertising" under the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended, and under similar state laws. If you decline personalised advertising in the consent prompt, or purchase TV Remote Pro, no such sharing occurs.
  • The categories of personal information involved are limited to identifiers (an advertising ID and an IP address) and internet or device activity (that an advertisement was requested or tapped), collected by Google as described in section 5, for advertising purposes.
  • We do not collect sensitive personal information, we do not use or disclose it for inferring characteristics, and we do not knowingly process the data of anyone under 16 for advertising.
  • To exercise any state privacy right, or to opt out of sharing for targeted advertising, use the in-app consent controls or write to support@gamifyapps.com. We will not discriminate against you for exercising a right.

13. Children

TV Remote is a general-audience utility. It is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age where you live), and it is not listed in a children's category on either store.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. We do not use the app to build advertising profiles of children. On Android, where a user is signalled as a child or is in a jurisdiction requiring it, advertising requests are marked so that only non-personalised, child-appropriate advertisements may be served. On iPhone and iPad no advertising request is ever made, to anyone, of any age.

If you believe a child has provided personal information through this app, write to support@gamifyapps.com and we will act on it.

14. Retention and deletion

  • On-device data is kept until you delete it in the app or uninstall the app. We set no other expiry, because we cannot reach it.
  • There is no account to delete, because none is ever created. Uninstalling the app is a complete deletion of everything TV Remote holds.
  • Your purchase record is held by Google Play (the Pro in-app purchase) or by the Apple App Store (your purchase of the app itself) under their own retention rules, so that you can install or restore on a new device. We cannot delete it, and deleting it would remove your ability to do so.
  • Advertising data is retained by Google under Google's retention policies, not ours. There is none from an iPhone or iPad.
  • Email you send us is kept only as long as needed to answer you, and then deleted.

15. Security

  • The connection between your phone and your television is encrypted with TLS and authenticated with a client certificate that your television has explicitly trusted through the pairing code. Another device on your network cannot impersonate your phone.
  • Your private key and certificates are stored in the iOS Keychain or in Android's Keystore-backed encrypted storage, not in plain files.
  • The casting server is bound to your local network only, serves one token to one file, and shuts down with the session.
  • Because there is no server of ours and no account, there is no database of users to breach.

No system is perfectly secure. If you find a security issue in TV Remote, please write to support@gamifyapps.com and we will respond.

16. International transfers

We do not transfer your data internationally, because we do not receive it. Google, as an independent processor and controller for Android advertising and payments, and Apple, for your App Store purchase, may process data in countries other than your own; both rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses and equivalent mechanisms, described in their own policies linked above. Nothing leaves an iPhone or iPad in the first place, so there is no transfer to describe there.

17. This website

gamifyapps.com/apps/tvremote is a static website. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and has no tracking pixels, advertising tags or embedded social widgets.

  • The only setting the site stores is your light or dark theme preference, kept in your own browser's local storage and never transmitted.
  • The site loads its typeface from Google Fonts, which means your browser makes a request to fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com. Google receives your IP address and browser user-agent as part of that request, as it would for any site using that service. Google states that it does not use these requests to build advertising profiles.
  • Our hosting provider may keep standard server logs, including IP addresses, for security and reliability. We do not use those logs to identify or profile visitors.

18. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the "last updated" date at the top and raise the version number. Material changes — anything that widens what is collected or who receives it — will also be announced in the app before they take effect, and where the law requires it we will ask for your consent again.

Previous versions are available on request.
